"Stop, Rewind" 2019

Embalm: to preserve from decay. In this piece, I explored what it means to embalm, figuratively and literally; from literally preventing a body from rotting, to our societal tendency to rewind time, holding onto the past in order to escape change. VHS tapes are nostalgic. We don’t really have a use for them anymore yet they’re made out of a material that will take up to a thousand years to decompose. By casting the tapes out of organic material, concrete, I am embracing the nature of decomposition by using a material that will decay, while simultaneously embalming other items in the cement by using them as aggregates.
